Bolt Crank is an unusual mercenary. He has the gift of being able to consume any metallic object and then later reconstitute it in his right hand according to the needs of his missions or the situations he finds himself in. It goes without saying that this gift is particularly practical when his pockets are already full and he finds an "appetizing" weapon.

[English edition: none so far; the Eden coming from Studio Ironcat is a different series.]
Researchers try desperately to find a remedy against a virus which decimates Earth's population. Eden is sort of an Akira for Y2K.
Really nice art, story a little like Akira, at least at the start, because afterwards it degenerates into SF fighting. (Rody)
In the first half volume, it looks like it's going to be post-apocalyptic stuff... And then in the end it's very good cyberpunk, quite violent and desperate, but above all relatively realistic in terms of the situations and the psychology of the characters. It's war, and nobody wants to be there... So, story-wise, it's worth a look, and what's more, the art is truly beautiful, with a fine and detailed line. Something to be discovered by all the lovers of SF, therefore ^^ (Ashura)
The manga is well done, the art is beautiful and the plot makes you think of a science fiction war which lends to reflection [?]. Complex and contradictory characters, action, tension, [and] an undercurrent of violence. A good manga which makes you reflect on the limited value of human life in this world.. Recommended (Pikouze)
[In the near future, a rapidly spreading virus, and the disorder accompanying it, kills off most of humanity. At first, it seems as if there are only three - or rather two-and-a-half - survivors: two youths, Enoa and Hana, apparently destined for the roles of Adam and Eve; and Rain, the crippled scientist who makes for a reluctant Jehovah. Appropriately, they live in the remnants of what was intended as a new Eden, a self-contained, self-sustaining experimental community. Without giving anything away, though, things prove to be rather more complicated...
[By the way, the characters' names seem to have been inspired by Gnostic mythology, though I couldn't get their roles to line up very well with those in the Gnostic mythos.
[Endo's artwork is meticulously detailed; his characters attractive and interesting. Despite being flipped, the Génération (Marvel) edition preserves all this and more. Even the original color pages are rendered (in grayscale) rather better than the norm. I'd recommend this one, though I do strongly suspect there's going to be an English edition at some point; this one is a natural for the U.S. market. I will admit I became somewhat disenchanted with Eden after a few volumes, when it seemed to be just meandering along (and one of my favorite characters was killed, sob).
[Difficulty: Like many science fiction manga, this one has its share of technical (or pseudo-technical) dialog. That, and the frequent (though well-marked) flashbacks make it somewhat harder, so I'll call it moderate in difficulty.]

A manga full of suspense which mixes fighting, sex and humor, with great artwork. (julie)
[Here's the blurb, from http://www.mix-image.com/:]
According to ancient legends, the samurai should make proof of his determination. Moderation is often considered to be a weakness. And extremism, outrage as a virtue. [Hmm, was this Barry Goldwater's source?] It is good not to forget. Yamamoto Tsunemoto.
[Um, OK. Rather than refighting the 1964 U.S. presidential campaign, this is actually a high school martial arts fighting manga series, touched with Oh! Great's somewhat warped sensibilities. Truth be told, it's pretty dumb and formulaic, but it has its amusing moments. And the guys are mostly weird and the girls are all excessively cute, so that must count for something, right?
[Ridiculously excessive violence and occasional nudity indicate its target audience of mid-to-late teenage boys (and, no doubt, their somewhat younger siblings who try to sneak peeks without their older brothers noticing).]

[English edition: in "planning," from TokyoPop]
Plain and simply great! The story takes place in the far west [i.e., Old West] and introduces Mingchao, a hypercharged Chinese girl who possesses the etogun, a powerful revolver with extraodinary abilities. The manga is full of humor and makes numerous references to cliches of our era. (docdusud)
[Here's the blurb, from http://www.bdland.com/:]
Ming-Chao is a little Chinese girl, turbulent and full of energy who lives in the Far West. At the death of her grandfather, a renowned blacksmith, she inherits a strange weapon: the Eto-gun. This revolver of unprecedented design functions through extracting the energy of materials from the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. A little rabbit stock, cow dung, or snake skin, and the Eto-gun unleashes a fabulous power! And thus the intrepid Ming-Chao sets forth on wild adventures!
Et Cetera is a joyous cocktail of humor and action, extremely dynamic and with an eminently pleasing artistic style. You'll be carried away with enthusiasm in the wanderings of the headstrong Ming-Chao, as cute as she is disaster-prone, and her friends! A veritable bundle of energy in the world of manga!
[You know what to expect, right? Another bouncy, amusing, rather disjointed shounen comedy/fighting/adventure saga, very much in the mould of Dragonball, Tekken Chinmi, or (for a more current example) One Piece. Two somewhat unusual features for the genre: it's set in the U.S., sort of, (or at least a mutant Old West); and the main protagonist is both Chinese and female. Not badly done for its type; or, put another way, "for those who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they like."
[Difficulty: moderately easy.]

["Manga-style" work by a French(?) author. Halfway between Star Wars and Starship Troopers, Eternal Midnight is an epic and dynamic space opera on a grand scale!

The city is suddenly attacked by a mysterious army, dragging the hunters into a combat whose endgame they can't determine and which will put into question the convictions of each of them.

ES is a hacker. It can insinuate itself into a person's head and adapt it to its convenience. It can thus make itself pass as anyone it chooses to the eyes of anyone at all, and whenever a problem appears, it disconnect itself... Both a fantastic thriller and a psychosocial drama at the same time, it's elaborated with scenes which are like diving into someone's head. (Maud)
ES is a good seinen manga. It's a quick read. The artwork gets better in the course of the volumes, and the plot is gripping enough, even if the characters remain a bit flat, you know almost nothing about their personality, you just see them live through events. But I still really like the whole package! (Nana)
[The original blurb, from http://www.bdland.com/:]
I'm a hacker. But it's into a person's head that I can inject myself in an instant. I read the data it contains, I modify its programming, and I adapt it to my convenience. I can make myself pass as anyone I choose to the eyes of anyone at all, even as a close friend or a deceased person. If ever problems appear, I disconnect myself and things go back to zero. So, I become again a total unknown for them...
I don't have a name. There doesn't seem to be any one that's appropriate. If I have to... all right, call me ES.
Both fantastic thriller and psychosocial drama, ES is a passionate series which builds marvelously on an original and audacious idea. Already well-known for her shoujo manga Mars, Fuyumi Soryo this time cuts loose into the fantastic with an astonishing ease and effectiveness, peopling her intrigue with characters both charismatic and enigmatic, and elaborating her work with powerful scenes, visually striking (plunging into heads, particularly). After Parasite [Kiseiju], ES is the next seinen revelation for 2004, a jewel midway between Otomo's Akira, Dan Simmons' Carrion Comfort [the French title is Chessboard of Evil], and Urasawa's Monster.

Kosumo Koganebara is only 17 years old but could die at any moment. She has a heart ailment and her blood group is rather rare, and it's in the U.S. where she has the best chance of obtaining a heart. So when she ends up in a hospital in New York, they bring in a heart, that of the young Himiko who has died in an accident. It's her heart that Kosumo will receive and at the same time, her potent powers: in short, Himiko was the most powerful priestess in Japan, who aided the government through her link with the gods. The shadowy Hitsugi was her bodyguard, he promises from this point onward to protect Kosumo who will attract a number of enemies with her new capacities which she has not yet truly mastered. (Mélanie)
It's above all a manga for girls as well as for all those who like stories of priestesses who combat the forces of evil before a nice background of Japanese or Chinese mythology and with an unmatched love story. (little lady)
[Oy! Yet more Japanese weirdness about heart transplants. The blurb, from http://www.bdland.com/:]
While waiting for a heart transplant, Kosumo Koganehara moves in with her parents in New York. Just when the situation seemed hopeless, Kosumo is operated on. The transplanted heart allows her to reach a world of spirits and Hitsugi, the guardian angel of Himiko-sama, the donor, attaches himself to Kosumo for the latter's protection.

[One of Samouraï's better titles, translated by the redoubtable "Naoki Haga" [René-Gilles Deberdt], primary resident of fr.rec.anime. Here are his words on it (from his "Cyber Namida" site, at http://kyodai.com/namida/caution.html ):]
Youichi Kadoi... This name may not mean anything to you - at least for now. However, fans of Bastard!! already know him indirectly, since he debuted as an assistant to Kazushi Hagiwara... And it must be said that you'd suspect as much in looking at, or rather admiring, his first manga, Caution, being brought to us by Samouraï Editions under the title Exodus Creators.
Only one volume unfortunately for a story which proves rather more interesting than the prologue would lead you to believe. In the year 2494, the Terrans, already victims five hundred years earlier of a climatic cataclysm which forced them to seek shelter underground for several centuries, are confronted with a fleet of invaders not so unknown to them: they are the same vessels which, back in the year 2236, carried away their inventors, the Exodus Creators, a group of scientists who were too disdainful at the time to stay and help rebuild their planet. But today, with their quest for the ideal planet proven fruitless, they want only to reclaim a small place for themselves in their native land... This the Terrans refuse them, and we can understand their anger. But then Hiyoko, an adorable young Japanese girl, encounters Dune, one of the Exodus Creators descended to the surface. As their idyll begins, the Terrans are confronted with the most terrible of dangers... The moon is on the point of crashing into our planet!
So as not to ruin the final surprise, which is major, let's say simply that "appearances can sometimes be deceiving..." In addition to an incredibly effective (and particularly moving) scenario, Caution is also one of the rare mangas which avoids the usual cliché of the valiant warriors born to save the world, and instead shows us people who, embroiled in a conflict they did not desire, become aware that they are not truly masters of their destiny, even if they feel they are comporting themselves as "heroes." Already a master of scenario and graphic development [or whatever you call them in English] (his drawings are at the same level as those in Bastard!!), Youichi Kadoi here announces his talent to superb effect in Caution and must henceforward be thought of as an author to be followed very closely.
[OK, maybe he's playing it up a bit, since it was his translation job, but really, it's not a bad book. It probably would have helped if it had run a little longer (say 3 volumes), so the story could have been better developed. As it is, the ending comes kind of abruptly.
[While it's the usual cheapjack Samouraï production job (flipped with no retouch at all, signs and miscellanea not translated, dialog occasionally misplaced, etc.), it is a nice thick book with nice substantial paper. (Oh, and ignore the ripped skirt and "reservé aux adultes" on the cover; there's absolutely no H content to this at all.)
[Difficulty: Naoki's translation is very lively, but be warned that it can be kind of hard going if you're not familiar with current colloquial French.]
